Mike Wetson Memorial Day - Mark Lucas
On Saturday 30th January some 230 players converged on High Wycombe RUFC for a CoacHclass held in memory of Mike Wetson, Wasps player and Cambridge Blue, who sadly passed away last year.

The day started bright and early with an opening welcome from Dave Larham, Community Manager at London Wasps. And then onto the rugby – two hours of skills development, enjoyment and great play for the players from High Wycombe and Marlow RUFC coached by London Wasps Community and Bucks New Uni coaches. This was watched by Mike’s family and friends, and also Tom Rees and Joe Simpson from London Wasps, who gave their time to add encouragement, and along with Susan Ogilvy, Mike’s widow, presented the “Player of the Day” awards for each age group. The day provided a wonderful celebration of rugby, a game that was an important part of Mike Wetson’s life.

Joe Simpson said after the event, "It was great to be able to support an event that remembered a former Wasps players by getting the next generation of young rugby players active on a Saturday morning. I thought the coaches did a fantastic job in keeping the kids warm in icy conditions and it was really nice to meet Susan (Ogilvy) and her family and talk about Mike's playing days at Wasps and other clubs."

But that was not the end of the day, with all players also provided with tickets for that evening’s match at Adams Park – London Wasps vs. Llanelli Scarlets in the LV Cup. Whilst Wasps had the majority of possession, errors allowed seven kickable penalties, six of which went over. However, Wasp’s possession enabled Tom Varndell to score the only two tries of the match. With the score at 13-18 and the clock at 0:00, Wasp’s final, spirited assault on the Scarlet’s line, lasting some 3 minutes couldn’t enable a winning score - and the game was lost.

High Wycombe and Marlow clubs are both extremely grateful to Mike’s family and friends’ generosity, through the London Wasps Community Foundation, to enable this fantastic event and hope that the players lived up to Mike’s high standards.
