Match Report - 1st XV v Swindon
1st XV
Swindon
Having said I would write up something about the game I have to apologise that the scribbles made and passed to me after the game were quickly lost as were my memories of the game - thanks to Kidders for providing far too much drinking options after the match.
The team for the day was -
Partis, Isham, Day, Bunker, Churchyard, Burnham, Price and Price (T & D): Chile, Sumnall, Smith, Mann, Wardle, Harding, Connell with Berwick, Prior and Whitaker on the bench.
I had to look around and see all the other first team familiars on the side lines (or in the bar after) and by that to be amazed by our strength in injured team member terms - I'll name some whilst still awake - front row - of course captain for the year and yet to play all round super strength star (not counting his poorly back though) Mawbs, with other crock of the season and yet to play No crutch this week Tyler, and man in the middle Truffles (just here for the beers I assume) or of course club captain George Dors who seemed most keen on the beer sampling options for the day (I guess Pete must be working or else he would have been around or playing): second row, we might yet to see Richie Blunden after his op but good to see old stalwart "Monkey" enjoying a beer or two in the clubhouse and of course our ever young Hargy (happy birthday again): back row boys on the touch line included our own international (and super brains physicist) Bryan and Big Lewi - gay as always, Simon (who has played in all our previous winning matches) and of course previous captain and mighty man Craig. In the backs the injury list has meant it has been difficult to work out who can even play on any Saturday so I'll mention a back line up from off the touch line today - Tim at 9 Matt Gilbert (shame about the shoulder, but good to see you still bring down support to watch even if you're not playing) at 10, Diggi, Tolly, and Dru (in the bar anyway)on the 3 wings with Robbo making up the back 3 or was that 4 or 5, (we should not forget Forest who has had a terrible time following his injury and subsequent reactions to treatment and also becoming a dad - so we really wish him and family all the very best and we hope to see him soon back down the club) and in the centres Downers and tother Whitaker - yeah the taller one or was that the shorter one (difficult to tell when you are under 6ft 6). Anyway you get the idea - lots preferring a beer and good touchline banter to getting out there doing the hard work.

Back to the match - Swindon came to Wycombe in a superior league position - 2nd to Coney Hill and were quick off the mark to show why they were in such an exalted position when they scored a super try after 2 minutes with a clever kick through which was superbly gathered before the touch down near the posts. Points added and a further penalty made it 10 nil. It was pretty much all Swindon and a further converted try made it 17 nil after only 12 minutes. Wycombe did settle and scored through Pete Connell, a try converted by Jonny Smith. Then with only seconds before the half time whistle Wycs got right back in the game with a Jonny Smith try set up after a great run from Ben Harding who made 60 meters and a further 30 meters going across the pitch before releasing Jonny to score. With the conversion Wycs were amazed at a scoreline of 17:14 at half time when they could have been looking at a heavy deficit.
The second half was much more even with Wycombe having slightly the better of things, a Wardle converted try and a Jonny Smith penalty against two penalties proved just enough to win the match as a final penalty from distance just faded wide from Swindon in the last minute. Final score 24:23 reflected a better second half from Wycombe and a good period of defensive resilience in the first half after a tremendous opening from Swindon, who will have left Bucks feeling they should have wrapped things up after taking an early 17 point lead.
This was a good tense game to watch with flashes of good rugby from two sides who both wanted to play an open game. My man of the match from the touch would have been Pete Partis who on several occasions seemed to be in the right position to snatch loose ball or work the turn over in crucial areas of the pitch- I know he always wanted to be a back but on such a performance perhaps back row could almost be imaginable!
